It's one of the most common questions producers, marketing managers and business owners ask when they start looking for a voiceover artist: how much will this actually cost? The honest answer is that it depends ... but in this guide I'll break down the main factors so you can build a realistic picture before you pick up the phone.

UK voiceover pricing isn't as opaque as it might seem. Once you understand the three or four variables that affect the cost, it becomes quite straightforward to estimate what your project is likely to involve.

THE THREE THINGS THAT DRIVE VOICEOVER COST

Almost every voiceover quote is built from the same three elements. Understanding them will help you ask the right questions and avoid any surprises.

1. Usage and territory

This is the single biggest variable. A regional radio ad running for one week costs considerably less than a national TV campaign running for twelve months ... even if the script and recording time are identical. The fee reflects the commercial value of the work to the client, not just the time it takes to record it. Broadcast and commercial usage, particularly national TV, carries the highest fee. Digital and web-only usage is typically lower. Internal and corporate use is lower still.

2. Script length and session time

A 30-second radio ad is a very different job from a 45-minute e-learning narration. Longer scripts take more time to record, edit and deliver ... and are priced accordingly. Most voiceover artists price longer work either by the finished minute or by the hour of session time.

3. Turnaround

Standard turnaround (same or next day) is part of the service for most professional voiceover artists. If you need something within the hour on a Sunday evening, a premium may apply ... though many professionals, myself included, accommodate urgent requests as standard.

INDICATIVE UK VOICEOVER RATES BY PROJECT TYPE

These are indicative figures for the UK market in 2025. Every project is different and a specific quote will always reflect your exact brief.

Regional Radio Ad
£150–£300
30 sec spot, regional broadcast, limited run
National Radio Ad
£400–£800+
National station, longer run, wider usage
TV Commercial
£500–£2,000+
Varies greatly by territory and duration of use
Corporate Video
£200–£600
Internal or web use; project or per-minute rate
E-Learning Module
£150–£400/hr
Per finished hour of audio, internal usage
IVR / Telephone
£150–£400
Full prompt set for most small-to-mid businesses

These figures are starting points, not ceilings. A major national TV campaign for a well-known brand will carry a fee significantly above the ranges above, reflecting the commercial value of that exposure. Always ask for a quote specific to your brief.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN MOST QUOTES?

A good voiceover quote will be transparent about what's included. Most professional artists include the recording, editing and delivery in their fee. Watch out for quotes that add charges for:

The cleanest approach is always to give your voiceover artist a complete brief upfront ... including how and where the recording will be used ... so that the quote covers everything you actually need.

SHOULD YOU USE A VOICEOVER MARKETPLACE?

Online voiceover marketplaces ... sites where you post a brief and receive auditions from dozens of artists ... have grown significantly over the past decade. They can be a cost-effective route for low-budget projects, but they come with trade-offs.

The process of listening to 30 auditions, selecting an artist, providing feedback, and managing revisions through a platform can take longer than simply contacting an experienced professional directly. For anything broadcast or commercially significant, a direct relationship with an established voiceover artist tends to produce better results more efficiently ... and you'll know exactly what you're getting before you start.

THE VALUE OF A FREE DEMO

One way to remove all doubt before commissioning is to ask your shortlisted voiceover artist to record a short demo from your actual script. Many professional artists ... myself included ... offer a complimentary low-resolution demo on your own copy before you commit. You get to hear exactly how the voice sounds against your words, in your tone, before you spend a penny.

If you're comparing two or three artists, a demo read is the most reliable way to make the right choice. Generic demo reels are useful, but nothing beats hearing your own script read back to you.
